Dundee Choral was founded in 1858 to contribute to the cultural life of Dundee through music. For over 160 years, we have put on inspiring performances of sacred and secular choral works. We welcome singers from all over Dundee, Angus, Perth and Fife and our choir regularly performs in one of Europe’s top concert halls, the Caird Hall in Dundee.
Our Musical Director since 2011 is Derek Clark. He has conducted Dundee Choral Union in a wide variety of music ranging from works by Bach and Schütz to Elgar, Vaughan Williams and Mathias. Derek recently retired as Head of Music at Scottish Opera where he was appointed in 1997, and during his time conducted more than 25 operas and many concerts with the company. We are regularly accompanied by the orchestra of Scottish Opera.
Our accompanist is Val Maynes. Born in Dundee, Val was a member of the inaugural National Youth String Orchestra of Scotland and a regular prize-winner at music festivals in Dundee, Angus and Perth. She was awarded her Performers ARCM Diploma in piano shortly after her 17th birthday before attending the Royal College of Music in London, studying piano with David Parkhouse and ’cello with Helen Just.
Val has always been in great demand as an accompanist, partnering with soloists including violinist Sam Bor, oboist Robin Miller, French Horn soloist Chris Griffiths, numerous singers and her cIarinettist husband and son and flautist/violinist daughter.
Val worked for Dundee City Council’s Education Department as Senior Music Instructor in its highly successful Instrumental Music Service, from which she has now retired.
Dundee Choral Union is always pleased to welcome new members. Anyone interested in becoming a member of DCU should come along and sing with us for a couple of weeks to see how they enjoy the experience of singing with a large choir.
